Can't connect to CRM 2011 On-Premise

I am aware that this topic has come up before and I have read your comments. I'm having difficulties with connecting to our OnPremise CRM; keep getting the error message that "An error occured while retrieving the organizations: Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved..."
To clarify, we have CRM 2011 on-premises and I am trying to connect remotely, i.e. not within our LAN. (see below for connection dialog screenshot)
We seem to be using port 444 rather than 443 for SSL which may be relevant. I am able to reach the live server through using custom authentication as using Windows authentication threw a kerberos error, presumably because i need to be within the LAN to authenticate through ADFS.
I have now come to a standstill though as when authenticating (with the same values as in the screenshot), I get an error stating, "An error occurreed while retrieving organizations: Object reference not set to an instance of an object",

Do you have any idea what may be producing the above error?
