Metadata browser: Null Reference Exception on load entities list

opening the metadata browser and clicking load entities causes null reference exception. seeing this on both 2011 and 2013, running windows 2012R2 with latest updates.

Can you confirm the version used?

Can you also confirm you are connected to an organization first?
